Editorial Reviews:

From the bestselling author of Plan B comes a funny and touching new novel about a girl, a boy, and a notebook that could ruin everything.

Emily Abbott has always been considered the Girl Most Likely to Be Nice -- but lately being nice hasn't done her any good. Her parents have decided to move the family from Chicago back to their hometown of Boston in the middle of Emily's senior year. Only Emily's first real boyfriend, Sean, is in Chicago, and so is her shot at class valedictorian and early admission to the Ivy League. What's a nice girl to do?

Then Sean dumps Emily on moving day and her father announces he's staying behind in Chicago "to tie up loose ends," and Emily decides that what a nice girl needs to do is to stop being nice.

She reconnects with her best friends in Boston, Josie and Lucy, only to discover that they too have been on the receiving end of some glaring Guy Don'ts. So when the girls have to come up with something to put in the senior class time capsule, they know exactly what to do. They'll create a not-so-nice reference guide for future generations of guys -- an instruction book that teaches them the right way to treat girls.

But when her friends draft Emily to test out their tips on Luke Preston -- the hottest, most popular guy in school, who just broke up with Josie by email -- Emily soon finds that Luke is the trickiest of test subjects . . . and that even a nice girl like Emily has a few things to learn about love.

Summary: The Book of Doom
Comment: When Emily's family decides to move back to Boston, Emily is distraught; she's already in her senior year of high school, she has already made best friends with Jackie and Lauren, and she already has a boyfriend, but now that she's moving back everything that she has worked hard to gain for the last two years will go unheeded. Worst of all is that few days before moving, Emily's dad decides he needs to stay in Chicago and "figure things out." When Emily reenrolls in her old school I n Boston, she's surprised that things has changed when she left two years ago, her two best friends though Josie and Lucy are glad their former best friend has come back, but they ask her to do the unfathomable; they want her to date invisible-guy-turned-obnoxious-hottie Luke, only to take him unguarded and humiliate as a revenge for dumping his ex, Josie, by Email. Hmm..seems like Emily has got plenty on her plate, will she be able to please her friends and play along in their vengeful scheme, or will everything go wrong like they always do when it concerns Emily ?

I loved this book, when I read the synopsis and the reviews, I thought it'll be just another YA book; a little bit of romance, and little bit of fun, and lots of drama. Well, it wasn't that this book didn't include all of these aspects, but it also entailed deeper concepts, like how do teens deal with college preparation, how do they deal with moving, and how do they deal with their parents' marital problems. So it really was a coming-of-age-story of a teenage girl trying to figure who she is and where does she stand in her ever-changing life.

Comment: I definitely enjoyed reading this book, and I don't really have many specific complaints, but I also have to say that I have read books in this genre that have had me much more invested in the story. This book is very formula. . . you know from the beginning exactly what the set up is, how it will inevitably unfold and every choice/mistake made in the book is very predictable. Now, that being said, I think this book was written well and that the characters are fun to get to know, just not very surprising. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the teen high school romance genre, but just don't expect the book to blow you away.

Comment: I liked the book, but the thing was well, Emily. Okay so the whole story is that Emily is dumped by her boyfriend on moving day (she's moving back to her hometown) and her dad is staying in Chicago. So she thinks guys are a waste of time and basically wrong! She moves back to her old school and friends. Now one guy happens to be different; Luke Preston. He was kinda unpopular back in the 9th grade and in 10th grade he became a hottie hot hottie. He dated one of Emily's friends and broke up with her by email. Not a good idea guys. Anyways Emily and friends decide to make a guidebook on what to do for guys. She and her friends decide to test it on Luke Preston by dating him and breaking up with him.
It backfires, naturally and everyone blames Emily, even her best friends(you have to read the book to find out why). I agree, what she did was wrong and mean, but her friends were part of it just like her. Emily was also just so juvenile. It's not wrong being nice. But it was a good book because of Luke. He was really sweet and nice in a way and funny, and he didn't deserve to be treated like that. But it was a nice book so I recommend teens to get it.

Summary: Amazing!
Comment: i just recently finished "The Book Of Luke" over just two days, it was so good. i was saving this as the last book to read before school begins, but i wanted to finish it so badly now i have time to read another. Jenny O'Connell did a fantastic job of portraying Emily's feelings, like being at a dead end not knowing what to do to fix things or to get herself out of the mess she'd created. i think she should write a 2nd book about it. i would love to read it. its amazing.

Comment: Why oh why do books that have so much potential of being good summer fluff reads have to turn out so badly? The Book of Luke started out okay, but everything just went downhill from there. The whole guide to guys thing was cheesy and the using Luke as a test subject was cliched and predictable. I could guess every twist in the story and towards the end, everything smoothed out quickly and without any bumps or problems which was completely expected and unrealistic. If one of my friends betrayed me like Emily did to her friends, I wouldn't be as quick to forgive and forget as Josie and Lucy were. They just seemed all too ready to forget the bajillions of things Emily had done wrong and let her off scott free. I think the one good part about the book was Luke. He was the one character who seemed real and actually likeable to me. He was the perfect guy character with flaws and annoying habits included, although based on the way he fell for Emily, I can't believe the horrible backstory that the author gave him. I wish there had been more thought and planning and details put into the book. It felt like the author just took a typical YA story, added some different characters and called it a book. And that is just not enough to cut it for me. I wanted some originality and unexpected twists but nothing like that was present and I was bored and unsatisfied. This book is not highly recommended.
