Editorial Reviews:

Highlights High Five is the newest offering from the publisher of the nation's #1 children's magazine, Highlights for Children. Like its older sibling publication, Highlights High Five is founded on the belief that children are the world's most important people, and helps set children firmly on the path to becoming curious, creative, caring, and confident individuals.

Highlights High Five celebrates the early years of childhood - a time of discovery when learning happens at every turn. Our magazine is dedicated to helping parents, educators, and other caregivers nurture young children by:
- encouraging a natural sense of wonder about the world;
- promoting reasoning, problem solving, and creative self-expression;
- fostering a love of language and a rich vocabulary;
- and inspiring them to be kind, to get along with others, and to grow in self-confidence...for children are the world's most important people.

Summary: Not as good as it could be
Comment: I started subscribing to this when my daughter was 2 and renewed with a 2 year subscription. So, I do like it. But I was expecting something more along the lines of a little kid version of Highlights. When I initially subscribed I expected a magazine that would be a combination of fiction and nonfiction. Highlights High Five is largely a fiction magazine.

I had hoped to find stories about other cultures, history, basic science concepts, etc. All of these things could be done in a way that little kids can understand and enjoy. It does have some educational content, such as counting, matching, an English/Spanish story, etc., as well as occasional nonfiction pieces. There is a page that features an animal every month. But if you are expecting a mix of fiction and nonfiction in every issue, like in Highlights, you will be disappointed.

All the stories are quick read, basically a few sentences per page. I also subscribe to Your Big Backyard, which targets a similar age group. It has a long story in each issue that covers 3 to 4 pages. High Five has nothing long. You can expect to get through this fairly fast each month.

My 3 year old enjoys this magazine. It has mix of poetry, stories and activities. The pages are sturdy. This is a pretty good magazine but it won't do much to broaden your child's horizons.

Summary: Great for preschoolers
Comment: I started receiving this over the summer and my daughter loves it. When she started pre-k this was reccomended by her teacher. It made me feel good to know that even professionals agree that this magazine is a wise choice for young readers or pre-readers.

Summary: Promotes spanish
Comment: If I wanted my child to learn the language of the barrio, I would purchase some spanish materials.

While High Five has activities for the English-speaking child, it also provides English-into-spanish translations.

So, because I am absolutely disgusted with the promotion of spanish in the USA ("press one for spanish", product labels in English and spanish, government publications in English and spanish, et cetera ad nauseum), I have cancelled my child's subscription.

Instead, I have purchased learning materials in French, Chinese and Farsi. My child will be multi-lingual - - but I'm refusing to promote the fractionalizing of my own country into englispan.

Summary: 1st issue just received!
Comment: I ordered this subscription for my just-turned 2-year old. She is rather advanced for her age, and absolutely loved the first issue, which we just received this week. Some of the activities are just much more than she knows, but I intended for this to be a teaching tool. I'm very pleased with it so far, and intend to keep the issues around for quite a while to use as she gets older and learns more. The pictures are beautiful, with not too much happening on each page, but just enough to keep her interest. She loves the search and find games, and the counting games are great for beginners. I like that each activity includes almost all ages intended as the target audience, without excluding the younger or the older ages. It's wonderful! Thanks a million!

Summary: age appropriate activities
Comment: I was vwey disappointed with my first issue. There aren't any activities that my 5 year old can do alone. I expected this magazine to be something I could give her to keep her busy but instead it is something we have to do together.
